Superfoods That Promote Good Health

Superfoods That Promote Good Health

Superfoods are foods which have a high concentration of vitamins and minerals to boost the immune system as well as help the entire body. Superfoods are also among the cheapest foods at the grocery store. These foods work best when they are combined. For example, a food that is high in Vitamin A should be combined with foods which are high in the B-complex vitamins, calcium, and anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are nutrients which help the body to shed pre-cancerous cells and fight illness.

So what are these cheap superfoods that promote good health? The least expensive are dried beans such as navy beans. Beans are versatile and can be used in different recipes such as baked beans, navy bean soup, and bean paste for tacos. The way to greatly reduce the amount of gas these beans cause is to soak them overnight and then discard the water. The ingredient in the beans which causes the gas leaches into the water during soaking.

Berries are among the superfoods high in anti-oxidants with blueberries at the top of the list. Blueberries offer good nutrition whether they are eaten raw or cooked, so go ahead and have that slice of blueberry pie. Raspberries, blackberries, and elderberries are also high in anti-oxidants.

Dark green leafy vegetables such as cabbage, brussel sprouts, and spinach help to promote good health by providing a variety of nutrients. They feed the brain and help memory, as much as they feed the body with calcium and an assortment of vitamins. Calcium plays an important role in helping the body to maintain proper weight. Protein plays an important role in helping the body to not feel hunger pangs and overeat.

Vegetable broth made from the skins of vegetables is a superfood that is packed with nutrients to promote good health. The broth takes only 15 minutes to cook and its ingredients usually include the skins of potatoes, yellow onions, carrots, and a whole tomato. It is then strained and ready to use. The reason that this particular vegetable broth is so nutritious is because root vegetables (potatoes, yellow onions, and carrots) have most of their nutrients in the skin. Simmering the skins will leach the nutrients into the broth. The acidic nature of the tomato will help with the process and it will also add flavor.

There are several fruits and vegetables in the superfood category. Some of the fruits which promote good health are citrus (oranges and grapefruit), apples, black grapes, bananas, and berries. Some of the vegetables which have not already been mentioned are eggplant, beets, broccoli, and garlic.

The health benefits from all of these superfoods can only be obtained when they are bought fresh, not processed. This is also the cheapest way to buy them. Include these superfoods in your diet to promote good health.
